A Gear Processing Machine Manufacturer Celebrating 100 Years of Business Enters the Field of High-Speed, High-Accuracy, Small-Sized Gear Processing

SEIWA CORPORATION (Kaminaoe, Hikawa-cho, Izumo City, President Toshihiko Tatsu), which was established in Osaka City in 1920 and celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, is a gear processing machine manufacturer that has business relationships with 600 companies in Japan and overseas. It was a small gear processing machine (hobbing machine) that they worked on to break new ground in fields other than the automobile-related business, which is their core business. Their first product was the gear processing machine “Artis HB056LS CNC horizontal hobbing machine.” Since then, they have been developing machines that enable high-speed, high-precision, and miniature-sized gear production, and have established a firm position as one of the world’s top-class gear processing machine manufacturers.

Inquiries from domestic and overseas manufacturers

The automotive business accounts for 60% of the company’s sales, and the company directly and indirectly transacts with famous domestic and overseas automobile manufacturers such as Toyota. They proudly take up the top share of gear honing machines (superfinishing) in Japan, which they supply to these major companies, and their high-precision and quiet gears are known worldwide.

In recent years, however, hybrid vehicles (HV) and electric vehicles (EV) have become widespread, and there is a sense of crisis that they will soon enter the age in which transmissions are no longer necessary. Starting in around 2014, they decided to search for a “new world of gears.” They turned their focus to the field of small motors and speed reducers.

Cultivating a new field with advanced technology

Their challenge was to develop a machine to process gears much smaller than those in automobiles. Miniature gears are mass-produced in unit numbers of 1 million, and properties including high processing speed and reduced time were required.

They designed the processing machine from scratch, assembled the parts, and repeated in-house evaluations to develop a product. Small gears also required smaller hobs (gear cutting tools) and a higher rotational speed. All their employees worked together through trial and error, working out the countermeasures against heat generation and changing the peripheral devices. The first machine, which was completed approximately two years after the concept was conceived, was extremely well received at international trade fairs by people in the industry due to its improved machining efficiency, low vibration, low thermal displacement, and ultrahigh rigidity cutting, all achieved through use of high technological capabilities passed down through their history.

▼ The attitude to manufacturing leads to confidence

We asked President Tatsu about his thoughts on manufacturing and future prospects.

In addition to the fact that this company focuses on after-sales services and equipment maintenance, the person in charge of production visits the site even if it is overseas to witness the installation and makes the final adjustments when a machine is delivered. For this reason, they have earned the confidence of customers with their sincere attitude toward manufacturing, including an order being received from a Spanish company that they had business with 20 years before because “their machine had not broken down in 20 years.”

Anticipating an increased demand in the fields of medicine, aviation, and industrial and nursing care robotics while keeping the automotive field, where refinement in machines is actually expected to require small motors, as their main focus, “we would like to continue to engage in our business with the pride that we are involved in gears that are used in the world’s top-level products and supporting the Japanese industry,” says President Tatsu about the future.
